Gum Grafting

Gum grafts can help improve the appearance of patients' smiles, and can also reduce tooth sensitivity that can result from a receding gumline.

What is a Gum Graft?

The term 'gum graft' (also called periodontal plastic surgery or gingival graft) refers to a number of periodontal surgical procedures in which the gum tissue from the roof of the mouth is transplanted onto another area of the gums

This is usually done to lower the gumline in order to cover exposed tooth roots in order to lessen sensitivity and to reduce the perceived length of the teeth.

Gum Recession & Your Dental Health

Gum recession occurs when gum tissue pulls back from the teeth, exposing the root of the tooth. An exposed tooth root can be very sensitive and painful, especially when exposed to hot or cold temperatures. Gum recession usually happens gradually, so many people do not realize it is happening until they begin to feel sensitivity.

Left untreated, gum recession can eventually lead to cavities and tooth loss because the exposed root is more susceptible to decay.
